PENELOPE AMERICAN LIGHT WHISKEY
@penelopebourbon and a few other whiskey brands like them is why sourcing is no longer a bad word. However, that’s because these guys know what their doing and how to blend. There latest and first of their Founders Reserve line is this 13 year old Light Whiskey. Light whiskey is whiskey that is initially produced with a proof between 160 & 190 and in uncharred oak barrels.
ON THE EYES:
The whiskey is, of course, a shade lighter than most whiskies with this much maturity due to its process. In the tilted glen glass, it’s has the color of clover honey with an orange tint undertone. I gave it several swirls to see the spirit’s viscosity. It was interesting because it left a well defined line at the swirls peak but didn’t really show a lot of running legs down the glass. The brighter color really does make the whiskey shine.
ON THE NOSE:
This thing is the bottom of your grandma’s purse on a hot summer Sunday right after afternoon service. It’s an overload of melted Werthers Original butterscotch….and it’s amazing. Rich butterscotch is dominant but also has honey and buttered sweet popcorn. It’s so desserty that it reminds me spiked Vanilla pudding or Custard.
ON THE PALATE:
Your tongue immediately gets covered like you sipped a can of Behr paint + primer….in a good way!! Ha! The American Light whiskey is oily and sits atop of your tongue. It takes those notes from the nose and multiples them by 1000. Imagine if that Werthers got mixed with her cinnamon red hots. It’s spicy but still creamy with some sugary orange spice cake sweetness. Despite the proof of 130+, it doesn’t drink that high. It’s a very delectable sipper with a lengthy warm finish. I am going to go get another bottle tomorrow.
