Undercrown Sun Grown Cigar Review

Looking to warm up from this cold snap that we all are experiencing, the next cigar was a great escape from what’s outside; @drewestatecigar #Undercrown Sun Grown.

The Undercrown Sun Grown is Drew Estates 3rd iteration of the line after the original Undercrown and then the Undercrown Shade. Released in the middle of last year, Sun Grown is already on most cigar smoker’s list as a must have. It’s constructed from an Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper grown, of course, in direct sunlight, a Connecticut River Valley binder and filler from Nicaragua. Drew added one leaf of aged ligero from the Nueva Segovia region of Nicaragua that adds strength and boldness

Personal impression:

Initial light and first 3rd:

The cigar lights quite easily and draws with little resistance. After a few pulls, you begin to taste the peppery spice that you’ll expect from a sungrown cigar. It comes on smooth instead of being a punch in the face. The spice is accompanied by a mild wood flavor. This combination allows the cigar to be bold yet smooth in its upfront profile.

Second 3rd:

Picking up where the first 3rd finished, the wood flavor is now transitioning to more of a grassy hay which regulates the spice even more. This settles the cigar down and makes it more tolerable for those who are use to a more medium stick. On the backend of the second 3rd, a dark fruit flavor note comes in. The dark fruit with the spicy pepper notes makes this a bold cigar but with a suede like smoothness.

Last 3rd:

All 3 of the major notes that I experienced during this smoke, mixes in a way where no particular note dominates over the other. You won’t feel as though something was lost at the end but more so a dimming sunset. A great mix of colors and notes.

Summary: the Undercrown Sun Grown is a great, bold, peppery, smooth smoke. It’s categorized as a medium to full bodied cigar but I would say that it’s more like a full to medium in profile. It would pair well with a glass of Malbec or Syrah.
