Matilde Renacer

From the new kid on the block to now being a seasoned vet, the @matildecigars company has gifted us with a few jewels over the years. Still maybe not familiar to all, Matilde is a brand created by a 40-year vet in the cigar world, Jose Seijas. Jose has had his fingerprint on other well-known brands such as RomeoyJulieta, HUpmann, Montecristo. In 2016, after a mild retirement stint, he came back to operate this much smaller product line. This cigar utilizes tobacco from 3 regions, Dominican (filler and binder), Nicaraguan (filler), and Ecuadorian (wrapper).

Initial Light and First 3rd

Slightly larger than most cigars that I smoke, the Renacer resembles a candy bar with its medium brown color and smooth texture. The aroma has a chocolate scent on the wrapper as well as a richer raisin, bark and floral note on the foot prior to lighting. The cigar seems to be very well packed, so it took some time to get this large gauge cigar going but afterwards the flavor comes on quick. It’s a noticeable cedar wood taste with a mild earthiness and coffee bean on the finish.

Second 3rd

It’s been a pretty consistent smoke majority of the way through. The cedar is bold but evenly balanced while you get a peek of caramel or toffee sweetness. The burn line is clean and straight with light grey ash, giving off an excellent timber aroma. You will see that the cedar returns but this time with more of a hit to the taste buds along with the introduction of pepper. The pepper counteracts the sweetness mentioned earlier but is well needed to balance out.

Third 3rd

An oily shimmer develops on the burn ring that can actually be experienced via the creamy layering of smoke that coats the tongue; heavy viscosity. As far as the flavor itself, the sweetness has faded, and now we have almost the complete opposite. There’s now a coffee and dark bitter chocolate mixed with the cedar. In the end, you’re left with notes of the coffee, pepper, and cedar. I would say that this cigar covers all bases; maybe not in the strength that some of you would prefer, but it gives you everything from wood, sweetness, bitterness, oily, and creaminess.
