Catching up with old friends gave me a great opportunity to bring something new to the get together. Continuing to make my way through #TobaccoBusinessMagazine list of top cigars for last year, today’s cigar is the @Cornelius_and_anthony Venganza. The cigar’s construction is an Ecuadorian wrapper that contains Nicaraguan binder and filler. This cigar is beautiful in its presentation; golden in color.
Initial light and First 3rd
With a quick light up, it’s just as quick in delivering unique spice and heavy wood cedar note up front. This is probably due to the ventilation and pull through the cigar has on it. It’s almost too much. The cigar isn’t loose by any means and perfect in its construction and yet your pull is almost effortless as you inhale. I would suggest using a cigar punch rather than a straight or ‘V’ cut to fix this. The spice note is black pepper and cinnamon with a pinch of tart sweetness on the backend. It’s a very full bodied start as I burn through the first inch or so. Nearing the end of the 1st 3rd, the spice smooths out and isn’t as punchy as it was in the beginning.
Second 3rd
A smooth leather flavor comes in calming the cigar down even more. The black pepper is still noticeable in the exhale. Despite the punchiness backing off a bit, the cigar remains to be in the full-to-middle flavor range. You’ll notice the cigar transitions to an oily pure tobacco flavor, highlighted by small pops of sweetness and light wood… let’s say wheat.
Last 3rd
In the last 3rd, the cigar begins to deliver an aged leather flavor. The oils add a butter, silk-like layer to the smoke that covers your palate. This all comes together to make the Venganza a very “traditional” classic smoke. It’s a Smoker’s cigar…..full bodied, leathery, spicy and consistent. It’s not dynamic in its flavor transitions but rather moves seamlessly from note to note. I would call this a Cadillac of cigars. It’s big on style and flavor, smooth as it cruises down the road, and can fit in any situation. It’s not over the top and can be enjoyed by many.
