Caldwell Hit & Run Cigar

The theatre is a place where art is communicated through music, song or dance. This art can sometimes be very complex but it’s true beauty is in its simplicity. This week’s cigar, the @caldwellcigars Hit&Run series, is a wonderful illustration of how simple execution can result in pure perfection. I see why it’s was on #TobaccoBusinessMagazine list of top cigars. The cigar is made of an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper and Dominican fillers. It’s a medium smoke that has a great balance of flavor.

Initial light

The initial light up didn’t take long and the burn was even throughout the first inch meaning that the cigar was kept well and held even humidity throughout the stick. The structure seems to be very solid as the ash holds on during the full first 3rd. The long fillers are evident here. The flavor upfront is a mild wood that is light and easy on the palate. It’s a steady smoke that isn’t brash or shy but walks a line between being casual and classy. I would point out that it’s slow to develop but the full flavor seems to come on nearing the back end of the 1st 3rd. It’s a slow builder but worth the wait.

Second 3rd

Those light wood notes that I spoke of are now at their full potential and can be distinguished as oak and may be a slight pecan. There’s a sweet dryness (maybe from the nutty notes) coming in at the halfway mark, but it’s quickly covered by the oak on the retrohale. It stays pretty consistent through the entire second 3rd and this is why I mentioned it’s simplicity early on. It’s right on the money as to what medium body cigar should be.

Last 3rd

Finishing out, the cigar is illuminated by a subtle dark cherry note. The wood flavors continue to be the main note as if the others are playing peekaboo, going in and out during the inhale and exhale. As I get into the last 2 inches, each of the flavors make one last appearance as a consolidated melody. A true work of art. I can see this going well with a nice IPA to pull in spice or a Kentucky bourbon to punch up the sweetness.
