Camacho Barreled Aged

Next on the the count down of #TobaccoBusinessMagazine top 10 candidates for cigar of the year is the @camachocigars Nicaraguan Barreled Aged. The premise of the Nicaraguan Barrel Aged is taking the corojo leaf and aging it in hand-selected old rum barrels that were once used to also age bourbon. The cigar has a unique construction made of a Habano Ecuadorian wrapper, a binder from Negrito San Andres, Mexico, and filled with various tobacco leaves from Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.

Initial light and first 3rd

Before it’s even lit, you are greeted with a rich scent of deep wood and leather with just a pinch of caramel. As soon as a flame gets close, the cigar takes to it and lights evenly. This may be due to the “power band” bunching method used by the #Camacho. Within your first full pull, you will immediately pick up on spice notes. The leather comes in and combines with the spice to give a warming sensation over the palate.

Second 3rd

As the spice dies down, a smoothness settles in. The leather that you may have caught a whiff of prior to lighting is now in full bloom and steadfast through out the rest of your smoke. Slight sweetness that could be described as a smokey caramel is just hidden underneath the leather and earthy notes.

Last 3rd

Earth and leather are the top flavors as the cigar near it’s end. I didn’t pick up any further sweetness so I can say that it’s pretty consistent for the remainder of the cigar. A nice boldness ends the smoke. Its robust, flavorful and straight forward cigar.

Summary

For anyone thinking this is a flavored cigar or a new gimmick, you’re sadly mistaken. This is a pretty well executed effort to layer the earthy boldness of the corojo leaf with spice and subtle sweetness of the rum aged barrels. Personally, I enjoy the mild, sweet flavor of the American Bourbon Barreled Aged over this one but I think this is a cigar that will satisfy any palate.
